Trump's Woke Warning Misses The Continent's Real Danger: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy offers a misguided view of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas represent an grave threat to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The true challenge facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. During this time, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Today, about half of the global top fifty tech companies are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening economic gap stems from stronger efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology dominance is decidedly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a pressing question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is essentially a two-horse race involving the US and China, with Europe starting at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among 27 different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are reasons for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of major reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: skilled human capital, excellent schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically boost economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. However, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
