Whenever a major awards ceremony nears, there’s always a demand to include fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would board games, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category during that awards season
- A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment that year
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games globally and have been for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these are games without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
