EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Additional Updates in the News

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to reduce security grants to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the case was “another example” of linking government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the holiday period, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
