Bolsonaro taken into custody after being considered a flight risk

The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The former head of state was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments emerged.

This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: Will you battle for your country, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the potential of Bolsonaro's "relocation to foreign missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a record of arranging to ask for protection through a consular facility", a announcement said.

The court filing highlights that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is situated around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist American leader President Trump, causing him to implement a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will experience a custody hearing on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also asked that he be allowed to leave his home for healthcare, saying he required regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the presidential race to his political opponent, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which involved plans to murder the current president and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was prevented because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. Lula was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, Brasília.

The law enforcement intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the time, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 national vote.
